Study II - Field

Field -- Hermit, Yafei Li, ca. 2018

Tune: Sunny Sand -- Autumn Thoughts
Ma Zhiyuan, Yuan Dynasty

Over old trees wreathed with rotten vines fly evening crows;
Under a small bridge near a cottage a stream flows;
On ancient road in the west wind a lean horse goes.
Westward declines the sun;
Far, far from home is the heartbroken one.

Study I - Touch

Touch -- In Front of Jokhang, Yafei Li, c. 2018

The same word TOUCH, the same Tibet echoed in my mind, always -- for the first time. But this time, I know Cy Twombly and Philip Guston.

I still plan to continue making more landscape paintings this semester. I am reading Treasure of Asia - Chinese Painting by James Cahill, and going to explore "the curtain/veil in Chinese painting" along with my painting, because Tony asked me what the curtain is and I said I did not know last semester. After the class of first week, I found the curtain exists not only in ancient Chinese paintings but also in Twombly's -- compared to Giotto's. I will write all of these delighted by James and Tony every week, staring from next week. The curtain needs to be explained by many words -- like repeat/echo/hazy/integrate. I will try my best to explain them one by one not only in Chinese but also in Western.
